Raising awareness means to give visibility to issues, trends, and developments that are not always at the forefront of public discussion or political debate. These may not receive extensive media coverage but are nevertheless central to the lives and well-being of millions of people worldwide – and to us in Estonia.
Raising awareness of the UN and the goals and activities of the UN is a key priority for UNA Estonia. Being aware of what is going on, together with the availability of appropriate information, is a precondition for a well-informed opinion about the UN, its goals and activities. Furthermore, it is also necessary for making informed choices and being able to take a stance on those issues, and for having a voice in discussions about the UN, Estonia’s role in the UN, and how the UN and its activities affect Estonia and Estonian society.
Through our activities in this area, we work to raise awareness about the UN, its goals, and the UN’s activities. In addition, we seek to raise awareness of current trends and developments inside the UN and the wider UN system. While part of our activities focuses on the UN as such, the other part focuses on the role of Estonia in the UN. We draw attention to issues and developments at the UN that are of relevance to Estonia and Estonian society, but also to Estonia’s activities and initiatives inside the UN. We contribute to transparency by monitoring Estonia’s activities at the UN and by making this information available to the Estonian public.
Our awareness-raising activities are aimed at everybody interested in important political developments in the world and in how these developments affect Estonia and Estonian society.
Activities in this area include guest lectures and a lecture series about the UN or related topics, movie screenings and discussion evenings, and roundtable debates. In addition, we make information available in different formats via our website and through social media. To raise awareness among students, we organize essay contests, wiki contests, and movie screenings.
