NextGen UN is a youth-led initiative by the UN Association of Estonia.
Our mission is to raise awareness among the youth about the critical role of the UN and the ways to contribute to its work.
Why?
Because the youth have an unparalleled landscape of opportunities for impacting society. From joining youth organizations to launching a grant-based project like this one, it’s easier than ever before for a young person to make a difference in the world! Further, each person who becomes inspired at a young age by the spirit of humanitarian principles, a sense of a shared fate of all humanity, and international cooperation can spend a lifetime making the world better.
But why are so few young people politically active? We believe that this is largely because of lacking the tools to get going, which prevents activism before it even starts.
For this reason, we are raising awareness of international processes and their importance. To empower the youth, it is necessary to make visible how they can have a voice, and encourage them to take the first steps to do so. This is what NextGenUN does.
Youth conference “How you can change the world”
Workshop on international organizations
Model United Nations
Visiting schools
- Up to 150 young people can take part in our first event, a conference in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs! Here, we will bring the youth together with experts and decision-makers, even the minister Tsahkna himself. The entire schedule is as interactive as possible and includes a workshop on creating social media content about international relations.
- Our second event will be a workshop related to the role of international organizations. This aims to give young people a deeper understanding of the processes that may seem alien or complicated. Not only will this raise awareness, but the interactive format will engage each participant and encourage them to stay active after the event.
- This simulation provides hands-on experiences in diplomacy, negotiation, and public speaking. We endeavor to make every participant feel confident and valued. With freedom to express themselves, the youths can discover their personal views. This is the only political simulation in Estonia aimed at university students!
- Held in at least 6 schools in at least 4 counties, these sessions explore global issues and the UN’s approach to solving them. They will meaningfully illustrate (through climate change, human rights) how international decisions shape local realities. Over time, they will help bring together a network of interested youth!
With all our events, the goal is to not just educate, but to inspire.
